In a significant environmental initiative, the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (RAFI) and GCash, the Philippines’ premier finance app, have joined forces to plant over 1,150,000 mangroves and upland trees across key locations in Cebu since 2021.
Through GCash’s GForest and RAFI’s “One to Tree” program, this collaboration aims to combat climate change and provide livelihood opportunities for local communities. The partnership includes three initiatives, two of which are based in the Luyang Watershed in Carmen’s northern town.
These initiatives have resulted in the planting of 600,000 trees, including native and fruit-bearing species, across 730 hectares of land. The Luyang Watershed, a crucial ecological area in Cebu, is expected to see improved rainwater percolation and increased water supply for neighboring urban cities.
The third initiative involves planting 550,000 mangrove seedlings in Daanbantayan, San Remigio, and Medellin, facing the Tañon Strait, the largest marine protected area in the Philippines. This project not only mitigates natural disaster risks and enhances the water supply but also provides livelihood opportunities for local communities.
In celebration of Philippine Arbor Day on June 25, GForest users can now plant five new types of trees in Carcar, Cebu. GForest, a not-for-profit initiative, allows GCash users to contribute to the environment by planting a diverse selection of trees.
This digital eco-movement addresses both biodiversity and the socioeconomic needs of local smallholder farmers. To date, GForest has planted approximately 2.8 million trees of various species across the Philippines.
