Cops were quickly alerted to news of a hit-and-run on Tuesday involving three suspects who fled from the scene of a freeway crash, according to an LAPD press release.

As officers searched for the suspects, they found Jillian, 51, stood outside her home holding a handgun.

Police said they yelled at her to drop the gun "numerous times" – but she refused.

One officer is then said to have shot Jillian in the shoulder, reports TMZ.

After being hit, the budding author is said to have gone back inside her home before coming out with her hands up moments later.

She was joined by the family's female babysitter.

Jillian was then booked in connection with attempted murder with her and the babysitter being taken into police custody.

She is said to have told cops that she left her home with the gun in hand after hearing about the three men on the run in the neighbourhood, according to CBS News.

No officers were injured in the altercation.

Jillian was taken to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics to be treated for the non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Both women have since been released, KTLA reports.

Police searched the home and recovered a 9-millimeter handgun.

The driver of the car that crashed in the initial incident was also detained by California Highway Patrol officers, cited and released.

Two remaining suspects who fled the multi-car smash are still yet to be found.
